At Big Leaps Occupational Therapy, we are passionate about helping children and their families reach their goals. We take a neuro-affirming approach, recognising and respecting the unique ways each child experiences and interacts with the world. Our focus is on delivering high-quality occupational therapy services that enhance development, nurture independence, and empower children to thrive in their own way.

How We Can Help You

We provide individualised paediatric occupational therapy services for children from infancy to early adolescence. We have experience working with children with a range of unique needs and challenges, always honouring their strengths and sensory preferences. We offer support in areas such as:
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Participation in self-care activities (e.g. dressing, mealtimes, toileting)
  • Self-regulation and emotional wellbeing
  • Social and play skills
  • Handwriting and school-based activities

Our Philosophy

Neuro-Affirming | Family-Centred | Goal-Directed | Evidence-Based
At Big Leaps Occupational Therapy, we celebrate neurodiversity and prioritise approaches that respect and support each child’s individual needs. Our therapy is play-based, child-led, and focused on creating a safe and engaging space where children can develop skills in a way that feels natural and empowering to them.

Approach

Our practice recognises autism as a natural and valuable part of human neurodiversity. We understand that autistic individuals experience, interpret, and interact with the world in unique ways that should be respected and supported. We take a strengths-based approach that celebrates each child’s individual interests, communication style, and ways of thinking, rather than focusing on "fixing" or masking differences.

We prioritise relationships, consent, and autonomy in every session. Our therapists use child-led, play-based approaches that honour each child's regulation needs, preferences, and interests. We avoid compliance-based methods or token systems, and instead focus on supporting emotional safety, self-advocacy, and meaningful engagement. We work closely with families and educators to create supportive environments that reduce demands, embrace flexibility, and foster co-regulation.

We create sensory-safe, predictable environments and adjust our approach based on each child’s sensory profile and communication style. Children are encouraged to express themselves in whatever way feels right for them—whether that’s through movement, AAC, scripting, or special interests. We see stimming, alternative communication, and sensory preferences as important parts of self-expression, not behaviours to suppress. Our goal is to help each child feel seen, heard, and accepted just as they are.

We’ve been incredibly lucky to have Jess of Big Leaps OT as our children’s occupational therapist for several years now. She is an absolute gem—intelligent, thoughtful, and a true out-of-the-box thinker. Her approach is neuroaffirming and tailored to each child’s unique strengths and needs. Her support has made such a positive difference in our family’s life. As a mobile OT, she’s also wonderfully flexible and understanding of the demands of busy family life. I honestly can’t recommend her highly enough. If you're looking for someone who genuinely gets kids and is passionate about making a difference—she’s the one!
