Cathartic Collaborations is a neurodivergent-led practice and consultancy based in Brisbane, Australia. Founded by Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and PhD researcher Caitlin Hughes (she/they), we create safe, inclusive, and uplifting spaces where neurodivergent and queer identities are celebrated. We specialise in supporting Autistic, ADHD and/or gifted adults, particularly those who have experienced late diagnosis, burnout, or masking in systems not built for them.

Our services span three interconnected areas:

Online Programs & Digital Resources: We offer accessible, flexible online learning, including self-paced courses, interactive webinars and downloadable tools designed to support identity exploration, nervous system regulation, advocacy skills, and neurodivergent flourishing. These offerings increase access to support for autistic individuals experiencing long waitlists or barriers to traditional services, and enhance learning for professionals seeking evidence-informed, lived-experience-led training.

Professional Supervision & Mentoring: We support social workers and allied health professionals to integrate neuroaffirming approaches into their practice, navigate systemic barriers, and sustain their wellbeing. This includes mentoring neurodivergent clinicians to ethically incorporate lived experience in their work.

Training, Consulting & Speaking: We deliver engaging workshops, professional development, and keynote presentations that translate neurodiversity-affirming practice into real systemic change.

Across all services, we operate from a foundation of equity, inclusion, relational ethics, and lived experience advocacy. Our mission is simple: to honour neurodivergent brilliance and help people build lives that feel safe, meaningful, and authentically their own.

Approach to supporting autistic individuals

At Cathartic Collaborations, we understand autism as a natural and valuable form of human neurodiversity — not a deficit to be corrected. Our approach is grounded in the belief that autistic people thrive when their sensory, communication, and relational needs are recognised, respected, and accommodated. We view autistic identity as a source of insight, connection, creativity, and resilience, shaped not only by neurology but also by the environments and systems around a person. Our work is informed by lived experience perspectives, Critical Autism Studies, strengths-focused frameworks, and trauma-informed, intersectional practice.

In practical terms, we provide neurodiversity-affirming services by adapting support to each person’s preferred ways of thinking, communicating, processing, and being in relationship with the world. This includes incorporating special interests and sensory tools, and collaborating on shared expectations for communication and engagement. We prioritise client autonomy, informed consent, and co-design at every step, recognising that each autistic person is the expert in their own experience.

We support autistic individuals to express their identity authentically by celebrating their unique communication styles, passions, nervous system needs, and lived wisdom. Masking is never expected — instead, we work together to explore what comfort, ease, and authenticity feel like in the body and mind. We empower autistic people to feel seen, respected, and able to move through the world with greater confidence, safety, and self-acceptance.
