At Children’s Dental Centre, we recognise autism as a natural part of the diversity within our community. We understand that autistic children experience the world in unique and meaningful ways. Our team is trained in neurodiversity-affirming care, focusing on reducing anxiety, respecting communication differences, and tailoring each visit to the child rather than asking the child to adapt to us.
We work closely with families and caregivers to understand each child’s strengths, communication style, sensory profile, and any potential triggers. This allows us to prepare proactively and create a supportive, predictable, and comfortable dental experience.
Flexible, child-led appointments: We structure appointments to match each child’s pace. This includes offering slow introductions, desensitisation visits, or splitting treatment across shorter sessions when needed.
Clear, predictable communication: We use visual aids, social stories, demonstrations, and step-by-step explanations. Our team avoids unexpected changes wherever possible.
Reduced-anxiety environment: Our clinic is designed to be calm and welcoming, with quiet spaces, minimal wait times, and the option to wait in the car until the room is ready.
Experienced clinicians: All clinicians are skilled in behaviour guidance, trauma-informed care, and sensory-aware strategies specific to paediatric dentistry.
Collaborative care: We partner with occupational therapists, psychologists, and support coordinators when appropriate to ensure consistent, holistic care.
Choice and control: Children are encouraged to communicate using their preferred method—speech, gestures, AAC, or scripts. We also give them choices wherever possible (lighting, flavours, breaks, positions, tools, etc.).
Sensory accommodations: We offer noise-cancelling headphones, dimmed lighting, weighted blankets, fidget items, and unscented materials when possible. The dental chair can be adjusted slowly or avoided entirely if another position is more comfortable.
Respect for stimming and regulation: We understand that stimming and movement help with regulation. Unless unsafe, children are free to stim, move, or take breaks without being redirected.
Preparation tools: Families may access personalised social stories, photos of the clinic, or pre-visit calls to help prepare their child for the appointment.
Family partnership: Parents and caregivers are invited to guide us on what works best for their child—whether that’s specific sensory preferences, routines, or regulation strategies.

2 weeks agoJust wanted to share my very positive experience with the children’s dental centre, from the beautiful kid friendly waiting room, to the wonderful Julie (OHT) being so patient and child focused throughout each and every appointment. My child had a check up and then required a follow up for a fissure seal which he was nervous for (2 and 1/2 years old) but with Julie’s approach and letting my son guide the appointment we got it done. Thank you

3 weeks agoWe had the pleasure of needing to see the team at Children’s Dental Centre- I can honestly say our experience has been fantastic! We needed an urgent appointment and were very quickly accommodated. We saw Dr Tim initially who was extremely thorough and explained what was needed and put a plan in place. My daughter had teeth extracted under GA 2 days later with Dr Sarah who was absolutely amazing, very caring, thorough and knowledgeable. We are extremely grateful for the kind and prompt care we have experienced with the whole team! My daughter has been very well cared for. Highly recommend the team for anyone needing great dental care for their little ones!

2 months agoChildren’s Dental Centre were amazing! My son had an abscess that required treatment under general anesthetic and Dr Tim and the team made it happen the very next day and made my son feel super comfortable during the process. He has a very positive association with the whole experience despite the pain he was having at the time! Thanks so much!
