Coast Tech Labs is a specialized technology capacity-building service on the Sunshine Coast, designed exclusively for neurodivergent (ASD/ADHD) youth and young adults (ages 12-30). Founded by Joel Biddle, an experienced Software Engineer, we bridge the gap between empathetic support and high-end digital creation.
We replace outdated “block coding” paradigms with professional, industry-standard mentoring in software engineering, creative technologies, local LLM training, cybersecurity & OpSec, and systems design. Through our immersive holiday workshops, and term-time squads, participants use cutting-edge tools (LiDAR, Unreal Engine, Blender) to collaboratively build and mod custom experiences, such as Minecraft-themed augmented reality environments.
Our core focus is mapping executive functioning directly to real-world engineering practices. By working in small, highly supported squads (1:4 ratio) facilitated by complex-needs support workers, participants naturally practice task initiation, sustaining focus during complex builds, meeting project deadlines, and collaborative teamwork. We structure our sessions into Core Engineering Sprints with ample decompression times, safely managing cognitive load while empowering young creators to turn their natural hyper-focus into elite, professional digital skills.

15 days agoJoel has done such a great job to create a program that bridges the gap between coding knowledge and the skills required to utilise the knowledge in a real world environment. This is a game changer for neurodivergent kids who would otherwise struggle to acquire the skills required to be successful in a workplace in later life. He has also created really fun and engaging workshops; his enthusiasm is infectious and the kids love being there! I'm so happy we have found Coast Tech Labs for my child!

15 days agoGreat program introducing neurodivergent kids to the experience of working as part of a coding dev team. Joel is great at getting the kids excited about the possibilities coding can offer, and tailors his programs to draw out each participants strengths, fostering teamwork and creativity in the process.

21 days agoAbsolute game changer for neurodivergent kids and families on the coast. My 12 yr old son has completed a 3 day workshop and attends a weekly software engineering group. Real & relevant skills taught while also allowing for personal growth, guidance and friendships. Split age groups, really great support team. Great also to have our Mayor to come by and recognise the kids and encourage girls in tech & science. Thanks Joel and Elise
