Approach to supporting autistic individuals

How I am 'neurodivergent affirming' as a psychologist:
♾️????️‍???? I am neurodivergent myself
♾️????️‍???? I use neuroaffirming language, and actively avoiding using terms such as ‘red flag’, ‘deficit’, ‘abnormal’, ‘risk’, or ‘disorder’
♾️????️‍???? I use a strength-based approach, highlighting key positive traits and unique gifts that are deserving of consideration
♾️????️‍???? I use of a trauma-informed approach, given that many neurodivergent adults have complex trauma
♾️????️‍???? I'll encourage you to fidget, move your body, stim, remove shoes, sit comfortably, allow your eyes to go where they want to go, wear comfortable clothing, take breaks, and so on
♾️????️‍???? I see people from their lens, not my own
♾️????️‍???? I view meltdowns as a personal crisis, and not as a behaviour
♾️????️‍???? I would never recommend ABA therapy to anyone
♾️????️‍???? I believe that we are different, and not less, and that all brains are beautifully unique

What sets Neurokin apart is the philosophy underpinning the practice in my opinion, based on my misguided preconceptions coming into it, and the consistency with which this philosophy is lived out across every part of the experience. The neuroaffirming orientation here is genuine and substantive; I promise you it is not a marketing posture, it is not a softening of clinical language at the surface all while the underlying framing remains pathologising; and all without the sacrificing of any rigour either. It is a working philosophy that runs all the way down: in how the assessment is conducted, in how findings are communicated, in the language of everything itself, and in the resources provided afterward. What this means in practice is that the assessment feels collaborative and warm; Amy's role is closer to that of a thoughtful, informed translator, articulating patterns you have lived with for years but never quite been able to name. This was something I was seriously worried about about at the start, because like many neurodivergents, I didn’t think my plight could be quite so captured by such a simple archetype. The report I received reflected the same care. The recommendations were thoughtful, specific, and clearly drawn from real engagement with my particular profile rather than pulled from a template. It felt like it hard really specifically been written for me, with great care and detail to my own experiences and particulars, and that's because it was! That Amy is herself openly neurodivergent is not incidental to any of this, as I believe the lived understanding really shows through in the experience, even in the small things: the pacing of the assessment, the accommodation of various communicative idiosyncrasies, the ease and grace with which neurodivergent ways of being are met rather than corrected, and so on. It matters more than I can easily put into words. There is something profound about being assessed by someone who is not just only looking at you across a clinical distance, but at the time also sitting with you in a shared understanding too, and is among the many reasons I cannot recommend Neurokin highly enough. Amy is honestly the most wonderful clinician!

I am incredibly grateful for the exceptional care and professionalism I experienced during my autism assessment with Amy Sigly. As a woman who was diagnosed late with both Autism and ADHD, finding compassionate and knowledgeable professionals was crucial—and this entire experience exceeded my expectations. Amy demonstrated a deep understanding of neurodiversity and provided a safe, supportive environment throughout the assessment process. Her approach was thorough, sensitive, and personalized, making me feel truly heard and respected. She took the time to explain everything clearly, addressing my concerns with empathy and expertise, which helped me understand my unique neurological profile better than ever before. The psychology practice itself was equally impressive. The admin staff were friendly, efficient, and incredibly organized, making scheduling and communication effortless. They handled every detail with professionalism and warmth, which greatly eased any anxiety I felt about this new journey. Overall, this team made what could have been a daunting process into a deeply affirming and empowering experience. I highly recommend Amy, and her practice to anyone seeking a knowledgeable, respectful, and compassionate approach to autism and ADHD assessment. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your care and support!

Amy is the most beautiful soul. Kind, caring, deep listener and very intelligent and thoughtful. Amy went above and beyond for me and made me feel at home. I can’t thank her enough. Jade was also exceptionally good at his job. Always going above and beyond for me when I would forget things. I wish they had space to take on new clients I love Amy so much.
