Approach

At Sunshine Home Support, we understand autism as a neurodevelopmental difference—not a disorder—that affects how individuals perceive, interact with, and experience the world around them. We adopt a neurodiversity-affirming perspective, which recognises that autistic individuals have unique strengths, communication styles, and support needs that should be respected and accommodated without attempting to "fix" or mask their identity.

Our approach is person-centred, strength-based, and grounded in respect for each individual's lived experience. We prioritise listening to autistic voices—both from the people we support and within our broader community—to shape how we deliver services and ensure our practices are inclusive and empowering.

Sunshine Home Support delivers neurodiversity-affirming services through a range of practical strategies:

- Individualised support plans: We co-design support plans with clients and their families or advocates, ensuring their preferences, routines, communication styles, and goals are at the centre.
- Consistency and predictability: We understand that many autistic individuals benefit from structured, consistent support. Our team works to maintain familiar staff, routines, and environments wherever possible.
- Flexible communication methods: Whether a person uses spoken language, AAC, typing, or visuals, we adapt our communication methods to support how they best understand and express themselves.
- Client-led decision-making: We support autonomy by encouraging clients to make choices about their daily activities, how they engage socially, and what their goals look like in practice.
- Training for staff: Our team receives training in autism awareness, trauma-informed care, and sensory sensitivity, so they can respond appropriately and compassionately to each individual’s needs.

We encourage and protect each client’s right to express their identity without judgment or pressure to conform to neurotypical norms. This includes supporting:

- Self-advocacy and expression: Whether through special interests, preferred clothing, stimming behaviours, or communication choices, we embrace the full spectrum of identity and expression.
- Sensory accommodations: We actively accommodate sensory preferences and sensitivities by adjusting environments (lighting, noise, textures), offering sensory tools, and planning activities with sensory profiles in mind.
- Safe spaces and downtime: For clients who need quiet time, breaks from social interaction, or decompression, we prioritise their comfort and right to step away without penalty or pressure.
- No masking expectations: We do not expect clients to mask their traits or behaviour to fit in. Instead, we affirm their natural ways of being and aim to create environments that work for them.
