What is an Allied Health Assistant?

An Allied Health Assistant or AHA is an assistant who works with kids to help them practice the skills they’ve learned in therapy through fun, engaging activities that support their development.

What goals can an AHA help my child with?

Speech & Language Pathology

  • Practicing specific sounds (e.g., “s”, “r”, “th”)
  • Building vocabulary and using new words
  • Developing oral language skills through story re-tells
  • Following directions and answering questions
  • Improving social communication skills (e.g.,turn taking and greetings)
  • Using communication devices or visuals (AAC)

Occupational Therapy

  • Fine motor skills: writing, cutting, using buttons/zippers
  • Hand strength and coordination
  • Sensory regulation through sensory play and routines
  • Independence in daily activities
  • School Readiness
  • Emotional regulation, strategies and social skills

Is an Allied Health Assistant a trained therapist?

No, an AHA is not a trained therapist.

An AHA is an assistant that works under the supervision of the lead SP/OT. The AHA carries out tasks or therapy plans designed by the therapist. The AHA typically has a diploma level qualification or are current SP/OT University Students.
